BUXTON host the Steve Casey Memorial meeting at Hi-Edge Raceway on Sunday afternoon.
Casey, who was involved with Ken Moss, Bernard Loftus and Chris Morton MBE, originally brought speedway to Buxton at the original track, which was inside the stock car track at Hi-Edge. He then went on to be involved with Belle Vue at Kirky Lane as a meeting presenter and was also heavily involved with discussions about the National Stadium before his untimely demise through cancer. Casey was also a former rider who rode for the Ellesmere Port Gunners back in 1974-75.
On Sunday, sixteen riders will take part in the meeting, which involves riders who go well around the Peak District circuit, including Simon Lambert, who has scored heavily in past visits, as has Ollie Binns, who recently impressed riding for Middlesbrough; Ben Whalley, who always seems to score some good points on his visits Dayle Wood and Mickie Simpson who top scored on his previous visit.
The Bulls will be represented by skipper Jack Smith, Luke Harris, who has been riding well this season, upping his average to over seven points, Jack Roberts, Arran Butcher and Jack Shimelt. Alex Spooner, Jamie Halder and Stene Pijper also take to the track, hoping to get amongst the points to challenge for a place on the rostrum, while Will Boraston comes in to replace Jack Kingston and Ryan Ashcroft replaces Ace Pijper.
The sixteen riders will compete over twenty qualifying heats, with the top six riders going into two semi-finals, plus two fun races in Steve Casey style. The winner of each of those races will also go into the semi-finals, with the top two from each semi-final going into the Grand Final.
The meeting has a few standout riders who are expected to challenge for the victory, and it’s sure to be a very competitive meeting. Many former riders have sent their best for the meeting from around the world, including former World Champion Bruce Penhall, Barry Briggs, along with Rick Miller and Phil Collins.
All proceeds from the meeting will go directly to the Speedway Benevolent Fund, which helps injured riders across the UK.
Gates open at 12 noon, with the parade starting at 2.45 pm and the first race at 3 pm.
