THE stepping stone to the National League, the Midland Development League, has a new home and title sponsor in GTS Products.

Run by former rider Gerald Smitherman and his partner Sherry, GTS are providing the four sides contesting the 2026 MDL at Buxton with their race-jackets, some of which were revealed on the Ductair Bulls’ stand at the recent Speedway Show. The designs were well received, and once the fourth side is announced, the colourful body colours will go into production.

The three teams already confirmed for MDL competition next year are the Potters, Kings and Wolves. The remaining side will be announced soon, with several possibilities in line to join the league that has provided a launchpad for countless British youngsters who have progressed to the top two tiers of UK racing, most notably current Great Britain senior squad members Tom Brennan and Leon Flint.

MDL racing features four-man teams racing each other in matches over six heats, with each quartet contesting three ’home’ and three ‘away’ fixtures – all of which will be held next season at Buxton following Birmingham’s sad demise.

Ductair Bulls boss Laurence Rogers, who ran the MDL from Perry Barr before it closed at the end of the 2025 season, says other teams may be formed and could take part in a series of challenge fixtures to be included in the second halves at Buxton.

MDL racing is dear to Rogers’ heart. He is already formulating a list of riders who will take team spots, although there will of course be openings for any newcomers who impress at practice sessions the club is planning to operate this winter.

He said, “The MDL is a vital cog in rider development, giving them competitive track action in a team environment. It’s a meaningful stepping stone on the path to a National League place. Over the years, we’ve seen many riders move on to bigger and better things, and it remains our aim to give them every chance at this level. We will run second halves at all home meetings, which will also incorporate heats for kids learning the ropes on the 125cc and 250cc bikes. Thanks to Gerald and Shelley for their sponsorship, and hopefully, we can attract a few more backers of the MDL.”

As well as running the MDL from Buxton’s hillside Peak District venue, the Bulls hope the British Speedway Promoters’ Ltd accept their application to join the third-tier National League in whatever form that may take for 2026.
